The Trust has secured a grant of £300,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support a whole range of heritage activities, as well as a full-time Heritage Officer and part-time Administration Assistant who will join GMDT in July.
Emily Davison's grave has been successfully restored and a joint education programme with Beamish and Woodhorn relating to this subject is currently being drawn up. We are also looking at ways to improve the signage for the site.
The group is represented on the Town Hall project board and is playing an integral role in the development of this historic building. We have also been actively involved in the Morpeth-wide signage and interpretation project led by GMDT as part of the Castles, Woods & Water programme. It is envisaged that many heritage sites (along with other sites) in and around Morpeth will benefit from this scheme.
The 2007 Heritage Open Days were successful and we hope to increase the number of venues at next year's event. Members of the Heritage Interest Group are keen to work alongside St. Robert's Church and St. Robert's School to look at ways of restoring Lord Collingwood's summerhouse in the upcoming year.
GMDT is supporting the 2008 Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering and will continue to do so in future years.
