Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering

Calling all revolting peasants!!

We are looking for volunteers to help us recreate an agrarian riot as part of this year's Life on the Land theme for the Morpeth Gathering.

This year's Morpeth Gathering will feature a distinct agrarian theme, unrest amongst the labouring classes in the late eighteenth century, revolutionary and republican sentiments filtering across the Channel and protests from locals crammed in dreadful conditions, many for what we'd now deem petty offences but awaiting trial or even transportation to the colonies. Unrest will spark riot and civil disturbances, anger at the hiring fair, discontent on the streets and a final violent confrontation with militia – paramilitaries as we'd now describe them, drafted in from Yorkshire!

For more information or to register your interest, please contact Tamsin Lilley on 01670 501932 or tamsin.lilley@gmdt.org. The performances will take place on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th April 2010. Participants must be aged 16 or over.

  We predict a riot!!

Please come along to our first rehearsal, details below:

42nd Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering

This year's Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering (17th - 19th April) was a great success. Everyone who participated thoroughly enjoyed the event.

We hope you spotted Sir John Vanbrugh, architect of the 1714 Morpeth Town Hall, portrayed by Ray Alexander!

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that was involved in the Gathering and to everyone who participated in the events.

A particular thank you must go to the organiser, Kim Bibby-Wilson and the Gathering committee for arranging another successful Gathering. We look forward to the 43rd Morpeth Northumbian Gathering next year.

The 42nd Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering will be taking place between 17th and 19th April 2009. This year's special theme is "Heritage Heroes" with an 18th century flavour, including Northern Historic recreating events from the first Jacobite rebellion and special appearances by Sir John Vanbrugh, architect of Morpeth's 1714 Town Hall, portrayed by actor Ray Alexander.

This will be a jam-packed 3-day extravaganza with plenty of fun for all the family. A detailed programme and tickets will be available from 1st March at Morpeth Tourist Information Centre. For all general enquiries about the Gathering, please telephone 01670 513 308.

We would love to hear from you if you would like to help out with any aspect of the Gathering - including stewarding events, setting up the exhibition, hosting performers, serving refreshments, donating raffle prizes, fund-raising, and distributing leaflets.

To register your interest or for more information email tamsin.lilley@gmdt.org or call 01670 503 866. Further information on this event can also be found in the GMDT culture calendar.

A Morpeth Gathering fundraising concert with Alistair Anderson and others will take place on 6th March in Morpeth Town Hall. Tickets are available from Morpeth Tourist Information Centre (01670 500700) or Kim Bibby-Wilson (01670 513308).
